The major contents of this course involve: (1) comprehension and analysis of lexical and grammatical characteristics of medical news; (2) strategies for reading and comprehending medical news; (3) reading and listening comprehension exercises of medical news and (4) extended discussions based on news contents addressing different medical topics.

This is a course designed for medical students and other healthcare professionals who need to improve their communication skills when interacting with patients and fellow medical colleagues. The course is divided into sixteen units, each focusing on a specific aspect of doctor-patient communication, ranging from taking medical histories and conducting examinations to making diagnoses and discussing treatments. The course aims to develop all four language skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking - through a diverse set of activities. The course covers various medical topics, which not only helps students expand their medical English vocabulary but also allows them to learn, review, and participate in discussions on important healthcare subjects.

The course includes 11 topics covering some of the latest and most exciting topics in science and technology. These include green building, biomedical engineering, hybrid cars, stem cells, semiconductors and energy efficiency, nanomanufacturing, mobile computing, food biotechnology, renewable energy, climate change, spacecraft systems, light pollution and Mars, etc.

This course aims to improve the students’ ability to write academically. Not only will it introduce these essential skills, but there will also be drills held in class for learners to practice using them. These skills include writing clear topic sentences, thesis statements, supportive sentences, and using signposts. They can empower learners to produce academic writing with a good flow, logical organization, and a convincing voice. Additionally, the learners will learn about the structure of a research paper. The prominent features of each section in a research paper will be explained, for instance, practicing synthesis writing for the literature review. Moreover, citation and paraphrasing techniques will be introduced to avoid plagiarism.

English Presentation Skills for Academics(EAP)
