Selected Plays of Shakespeare(EMI)

All the world is a stage: do we sometimes play the role of Romeo/Juliet, Macbeth/Lady Macbeth, Hamlet/Ophelia, Claudius/Gertrude? This course raises and attempts to answer this question: “What’s Shakespeare to us?” To answer this question, we will read three of Shakespeare’s plays (Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet), watch important scenes from the film adaptation (directed respectively by Mark Brozel, Baz Luhrmann, and Kenneth Branagh), and discuss three Taiwanese movies (The World between Us, You Are the Apply of My Eye, The Fourth Portrait) with special emphasis on the topics of good/evil, love/hatred, life/death, to delve into the meanings of Shakespeare in our time.
