This course aims to provide introductory knowledge in the field of linguistics, enabling students to generally understand the basic nature of language. Additionally, by conveying language-related knowledge that spans disciplines such as psychology, biology, computer science, and physics, as well as utilizing dialogues and plot content from movies and dramas (i.e., "My Fair Lady," "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," "Arrival," "Secret Garden," "Tenet"), students will understand the practical applications of language in science and learn to explore the science of language in everyday life.

 

On to Stories from Greek Tragedy and Greek Epic(EMI) 

希臘史詩悲劇故事導讀(EMI) 

This course focuses on the myths of ancient Greece by looking into Greek epics and Greek tragedies, as well as the philosophical, cultural, political significances they represent. As the background stories which lay down the foundation of western civilization, studying the worldview of these stories will help students achieve understanding as to how such key notions as love, family, god, interpersonal relationship develop in the western world.

 

Selected Plays of Shakespeare(EMI)

All the world is a stage: do we sometimes play the role of Romeo/Juliet, Macbeth/Lady Macbeth, Hamlet/Ophelia, Claudius/Gertrude? This course raises and attempts to answer this question: “What’s Shakespeare to us?” To answer this question, we will read three of Shakespeare’s plays (Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet), watch important scenes from the film adaptation (directed respectively by Mark Brozel, Baz Luhrmann, and Kenneth Branagh), and discuss three Taiwanese movies (The World between Us, You Are the Apply of My Eye, The Fourth Portrait) with special emphasis on the topics of good/evil, love/hatred, life/death, to delve into the meanings of Shakespeare in our time.

Global Perspectives: Exploring Social Issues Through Documentaries (EMI)

This course provides an introduction to documentary filmmaking with a focus on social and practical aspects. The course is divided into two parts:
1. In the first half of the semester, students will study documentary films from English-speaking countries, gaining insights into global social issues and cultural narratives. This will encourage reflection on humanitarian concerns and cultural diversity. Students will identify a local issue with global relevance for their own documentary projects.
2. In the second half of the semester, students will develop scripts for short documentaries on chosen social issues, working in teams. The course emphasizes cultural understanding, narrative construction, and ethical filmmaking. Weekly progress reports will allow students to share their experiences, challenges, and reflections. By producing their own documentaries, students will enhance their critical thinking, social awareness, and cultural appreciation, while applying their English skills in a practical, creative context.
This course aims to cultivate global perspectives and local understanding, equipping students to engage with and contribute to both international and local discourses through the medium of documentary filmmaking.
